Pattern Review: The Dress That Ate My Weekend

Forty-one pieces. Eleven hours. One very smug finished garment. Was it worth it? (Yes.)

This is a full dress. Not a shift, not a pillowcase — an actual dress with a lined bodice, a gathered skirt and a proper zip. It took me most of a weekend and I complained for most of it.

The instructions were excellent. The size range was generous. The only thing that tripped me up was the sleeve: the instructions said to ease it, and what they meant was 'gather it by an amount that feels alarming'. Ease it gently and it fits beautifully.

Would I make it again? Yes, but I'd allow two full days instead of one weekend, and I'd buy the recommended interfacing, which I definitely did not.

1What you’ll need

  • 3¼ yd of woven fabric (my pick: a cotton-linen blend)
  • Interfacing for the bodice and waistband
  • An invisible zip and a lining fabric
  • A calendar with two free days in it

2How to make it

  1. 1Cut and construct the bodice first, and stay inside the seam allowances while you check the fit.
  2. 2Add the lining to the bodice, keeping the neckline edge open for turning.
  3. 3Insert the invisible zip before you attach anything else.
  4. 4Attach the gathered skirt to the bodice at the waist and check the whole thing on you.
  5. 5Finish the hem, turn the whole thing right-side-out, and press it until it looks store-bought.
