Bias Tape Without Tears

Make your own, attach it cleanly, and stop wrestling with curved necklines forever.

Bias tape is a strip of fabric cut on the diagonal, which is why it curves beautifully around a neckline or an armhole. Buy it if you want to, but making your own costs almost nothing and you get it in exactly the colour you want.

The trick is that the strips don't need to be perfectly even. A slightly wonky strip cut on the true bias will still lie flat, and it will match the curve of your garment far better than a strip cut straight.

Once you've made a metre or two of it, you'll never buy the premade stuff again.

1What you’ll need

  • ½ yard of lightweight fabric (cotton lawn, voile or leftover quilting cotton)
  • Scissors, pins and a sewing machine
  • Optional: a bias tape maker or a rolled hem foot

2How to make it

  1. 1Fold your fabric in half diagonally, right sides together, and press the fold.
  2. 2Mark lines ¼ in apart parallel to the fold and cut strips along them.
  3. 3Sew the strips right sides together in pairs, joining one edge to the next to make one long strip.
  4. 4Press the seams open and trim the strips into one wide strip with the seams running at an angle.
  5. 5Fold the strip in half lengthwise, hide the raw edges and press. Attach it with the raw edges toward the garment.
