Threading a machine feels fiddly until you know it is simply a path from the spool, through the tension and take-up guides, and down to the needle. This guide covers the usual setup on a domestic sewing machine. Machines vary, so follow the arrows printed on yours or its manual whenever they differ.
Before you thread
Switch the machine off while working near the needle. Raise the needle to its highest point by turning the handwheel towards you, then lift the presser foot. Raising the foot opens the upper tension discs so the thread can sit between them. Check that your bobbin is wound evenly and that it is the type made for your machine.
Threading tips that solve most tangles
Keep a little slack in the thread while you guide it through each marked guide. Make sure the thread passes through the take-up lever; missing that step is a common reason the thread loops underneath the fabric. Thread the needle in the direction shown in your manual. Many domestic machines thread front to back, but some differ.
Test before sewing a project
Hold both thread tails towards the back under the presser foot and stitch a few centimetres on a scrap of the same fabric. If the thread nests underneath, rethread the upper thread with the presser foot raised and check that the bobbin is seated in the direction shown in your manual. If you are unsure about a threading path or bobbin case, stop and check the model guide rather than forcing anything.
1What you’ll need
- A domestic sewing machine and its manual
- All-purpose thread and a compatible wound bobbin
- A small scrap of the fabric you plan to sew
2How to make it
- 1Switch the machine off. Raise the needle with the handwheel turned towards you, then lift the presser foot.
- 2Place the spool on its holder and follow the machine’s numbered guides, including the tension path and take-up lever.
- 3Thread the needle in the direction specified for your machine, then pull about 10 cm of thread through.
- 4Insert the bobbin as shown in the manual. Hold the top thread gently and turn the handwheel towards you to bring up the bobbin thread if your machine requires it.
- 5Pull both thread tails under the foot towards the back and sew a few test stitches on scrap fabric.
